PMR Assists in Search on Broken Top
Saturday, November 10, 2001
Members of Portland Mountain Rescue traveled 4 hours to Broken Top Mountain, near Bend, Oregon, to assist in an ongoing search for a missing hiker.  The man, a 24-year-old from Pennsylvania, had not returned from an attempted mid-week solo ascent of the 9,165-foot volcanic peak in the Three Sisters Wilderness in Deschutes County.  He apparently had little equipment and insufficient clothing to deal with the sub-freezing night-time temperatures at this time of year.
After his 19-year-old brother reported him missing, the search began late in the week in the Green Lakes area of the Wilderness.  PMR was called in Saturday to help cover the technically challenging areas of the remote mountain prior to the arrival of a forecasted weather system.
Unfortunately, as of Saturday evening, no sign of the missing hiker was found and PMR was released from the search by the Deschutes County Sheriff Search and Rescue coordinator.
