Missing Hungarian Not Found On Mount Hood
Saturday, September 8, 2001

Portland Mountain Rescue assisted the Hood River County Sheriff, the Crag Rats and other search and rescue crews trying to locate a Hungarian exchange student missing on the North Side of Mount Hood.

The 24-year-old male was reported missing Monday after leaving his group of friends and hiking alone near the Eliot Glacier.  He never returned to meet the group.

The hiker was wearing little more than a light jacket when he disappeared and, as the weather turned cold and snowy on Wednesday, searchers began looking for him on the glacier and in various drainages.

Unfortunately, even after three full days of intensive searching, the hiker was not found.  The operation was called off nearly a week after he went missing.
