PMR Assists in Search for Missing Climber on Mt. Adams
October 13, 2008

Portland Mountain Rescue assisted Yakima County Sheriff's Office in a search for a 27-year-old man on Mt Adams. Derek Mamoyac set out for the summit of Mt Adams on Sunday, October 12th when he failed to show for work on Monday, his family called the authorities. PMR was activated Monday evening and sent teams to assist in search efforts on Tuesday and Wednesday. PMR teams searched the standard South Spur route to the summit, but few clues were found.

Mamoyac was found by a canine search team on Friday, October 17th at approximately 6,000 ft on the southwest side of the mountain. He was cold, dehydrated and had a broken ankle, and the decision was made to call in for an air evacuation.

Mamoyac reported that he had slipped on some snow while descending Sunday afternoon causing to break his ankle. Over the next several days he managed to drag himself down to tree line where he was eventually found by search and rescue on Friday.
