PMR Responds to Report of Two Missing 12-Year-Olds
Saturday, March 23, 2002

Just after dusk on Saturday, the Clackamas County Sheriff summoned Portland Mountain Rescue to Mount Hood's Timberline Lodge after two 12-year-old snowboarders were reported missing.

The boys had not returned to their bus at the end of the day and were reported missing shortly thereafter.  Several PMR members were already on the scene and immediately joined in the search.  As darkness approached and the pair were not found, the Sheriff requested that additional PMR members respond to look for the pair.

About 90 minutes after the group callout, the boys were located in their hotel room in Government Camp, a few miles South of Timberline Lodge.  They evidently had received a ride down the mountain from a family member and had not informed the bus driver of their change in plans.  Other family members at Timberline Lodge learned that the boys were missing and, not knowing that the pair were safe, contacted the Sheriff.

There were at least 10 PMR volunteers either on the scene or on their way to the mountain when the mission was called off.
