PMR Member Joins Successful Mirror Lake Search
Saturday, November 23, 2002

A PMR Board of Directors member joined a successful search and rescue mission that guided three lost hikers near Mount Hood's Mirror Lake Trail.

Marty Johnson was driving home from Government Camp, Oregon and noticed a USDA Forest Service vehicle located at the roadside trailhead of Mirror Lake.  Upon investigation, Mr. Johnson found that the hikers had called authorities using their cell phone and stated that they had become lost after taking a "shortcut."

The team determined that the hikers were most likely downstream in the canyon that runs West from the trailhead.  Mr. Johnson geared up and joined two Reach and Treat paramedics from American Medical Response and entered the trail.  The search party left the trail and, after reaching the edge of the canyon, established voice contact with the missing hikers.

The team descended the steep canyon, reached the three subjects and escorted them back up to the trail.  Soon after returning to the trail, the party was met by members of Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue and the entire group returned safely to the trailhead.

The Mirror Lake Trail is very popular and easy to follow, but leaving any marked trail is unadvised without proper equipment and navigation skills.
